Kids Can Learn About Patriotism from Dogs

On this veterans day, it’s appropriate to recognize that Dogs can be Veterans too! They serve in all of the branches of the U.S. Military: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy! Military dogs have saved the lives of many of our soldiers. They have also sacrificed their own lives.

Recently Congress authorized the “U.S. Working Dog Teams National Monument” to honor dogs that have served in combat since World War II. The picture above is a front view of the monument from the John Burnam Monument Foundation.  The memorial has been financed by Natural Balance Pet Food and Petco Animal Supplies. Joey Herrick, President of Natural Balance, promised to raise the funds for the memorial and its upkeep through the sales of a Jerky Bark treat sold at Petco.  Maddie’s Fund, a pet rescue foundation, also signed on to help sponsor the monument.

The memorial statue was  previewed on the Natural Balance float in the Pasadena, California Tournament of Roses Parade, January 1, 2012. It’s now on display at its permanent location at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas where most of the Military Dogs get their training. There are lots of websites where kids can research the different jobs that dogs do in the military. Dogs not only serve in our military, they also serve our soldiers after they return to civilian life. There are organizations that provide therapy dogs to our servicemen that are recovering from war injuries.
