Back to School Already?

How does time go Baby and cat sheknowsdotcomso fast!?! School starts here in our So Cal district in just 2 days! Camp was only over yesterday and there’s hardly been time to get haircuts, lunch bags, backpacks and clean clothes – much less new clothes.

Today we were looking at the notebook that the school gave new students on last year’s first day. It was a normal spiral notebook but the printed content was impressive. It was a daily planner with lessons about character building. It focused on honesty, citizenship, responsibility, fairness, caring and respect. Those are all good values and were supported throughout the diary with space for students to write in their assignments and achievements. In fact, it was so positive an approach we’re hoping that this year there will be a new one with similar lessons for the new school year.

As good as it was, there was something missing. One of the first value lessons that children learn, from their parents usually, but it’s repeated in school, is:  Be Kind to Animals. It usually comes under the category of Respect. Children do have to be taught to be kind to animals. They have to be shown how gentle they must be to small and young animals and how careful they need to be around big animals. They need to feel the warm, soft fur of mammals or the rough scales of the reptiles, or the fluttering heartbeats of little birds, for themselves.

It’s unfortunate but many studies have shown that children that aren’t taught to love animals often end up being ones that harm pets. We can’t count on our schools to teach our kids everything so lets be sure that we are good examples of being kind to pets.  Check out our character building plan for the primary grades – The Back Bones of Character, http://www.kidoodlepets.com/back_bones_of_character.php which is part of all our books about pets – along with fun things for kids to do with their pets.  We also delve further into the values involved in building character in children in the “Building Blocks of Good Character” – shown on the Home Page of www.kidoodlepets.com
