Did we mention, it’s not August, It’s Dog-gust! The Shelter Dog Birthday Month!
August is not one of the “busy” months on the dog calendar. It was National Homeless Animal Day on the 3rd and Black Cat Appreciation day on the 17th and National Dog Day on the 23rd. The 11th was the end (according to the Farmer’s Almanac) of the “Dog Days of Summer,” which are supposedly the hottest days of summer. In fact, it’s almost half over! But August has very important meaning to a lot of shelter dog families (any shelter pet really). If you’ve adopted a pet, chances are, unless it has a pedigree, that they don’t know the birthday of the animal you adopt. It’s important to us as pet families. We like to celebrate our pet’s birthdays with special treats. Some families go all out and have a party for their pet’s birthday. But how can you do that if you don’t know what it is?
Luckily, a few years ago, the North Shore Animal League, Long Island, NY declared August 1st the Universal Birthday for shelter animals. You could also pick another day in Dogust. Like if your birthday is on the 12th or the 27th, maybe you’d like your dog’s birthday to be Dogust 27th!
Whatever you decide you’d like to do, is up to your family. The point is to honor your shelter dog (or cat or bunny) with a special day of appreciation – a birthday!
