Miss Lusitano Arrives

The 4th horse has arrived! The beautiful palomino-colored Lusitano filly arrived on the 4th. She was picked up in Northern California by one of those big horse transports that carries about 12 horses in individual stalls. They have a driver and two people in back with the horses to monitor them and load/unload. It was a long trip to Southern California, complicated by the stops to pick up and deliver race horses to and from different race tracks on the way. There was probably lots of clattering and squealing of horses getting on and off at the stops, not to mention curves and bumps that throw a little pony off balance while driving.

Jacinta 1st Haircut 922214It was just shy of midnight when they arrived, a long day for the little lady! Separated from her mother for a only a month, our little pony was scared and didn’t want to get out of the trailer. At six months, she’s not “little” anymore but one person leading her and one pushing from the back got her safely down the ramp and led into her new stall in no time.

Surprise! The breeder had given her the first haircut before she left! Lusitanos have a “mohawk” trimmed mane and half tail. So grown up looking! Earlier in the day the Missouri Fox Trotter had been moved down to the ranch in a stall right next to hers. Mr. Dependable will be a good guardian for her.

We were down to the ranch early the next morning, before she woke up! As she got up from the soft bed of shavings on the stall floor you could imagine she was wondering where in the world she was! And who were these excited people gawking at her! Getting acquainted without overwhelming her was the first step in our new relationship. The first body brushing scared her as if it was a new experience. The (all natural) fly spray totally freaked her out! A few circles around the corral were next, then back to the stall to relax and meet Mr. D, who hadn’t taken his eyes off her and extended his nose for a nuzzle. She’s in good hands with him – as long as she stays away from the water troughs when he’s there. He loves water and will splash anything wet. Welcome to your new family Lusi – wait until you meet the dogs and cats!
