BAD CONDITIONS MEAN 2015 IDITAROD HAS TO RESTART MONDAY 3-9
3-7-15 – The Legendary Iditarod race sled dog race did not get off to a good start from Anchorage, Alaska this year. Unsafe trail conditions made sleds bounce all over the place and was a big risk to drivers and dogs. For only the 4th time in race history the race will be moved to Fairbanks and restarted on Monday the 9th at 10 am. This cuts out about 18 miles of difficult and unsafe trail.
One of our favorite pet events to cover, the Iditarod is the ultimate challenge for drivers and sled dogs through some of the toughest trails, hills, valleys and river crossings we can image – usually at below freezing temperatures and horrible wind conditions.
IDITAROD PAYS TRIBUTE TO 1925 RACE TO SAVE CHILDREN OF NOME
The famous race, started in 1966 (and again in 1973 to now) runs in honor of the 1925 race from Anchorage to Nome to deliver Diphtheria serum to save the lives of the many sick children of Nome. Anchorage had serum and it was sent to Nenana by train. From there it had to be traversed over the 674 miles to Nome by sled. Kidoodlepets.com has followed the Iditarod for many years and there are articles about Balto, one of the most famous lead sled dogs, who brought in the final team to the children of Nome. Come back for more coverage of the famous race or visit www.Iditarod.com/videos and watch the video racer Jeff King made of the dramatic run he and his dogs made earlier from Anchorage to Fairbanks and the incredibly hard time he had keep his sled on the trail, in spite of the fact that the dogs ran well.
