This blog is about connecting kids and pets and talking about the benefits pets bring to our lives. Somehow pets get intertwined with everything in my life. Earlier this week I was reading some of the dreadful Paris news on CBS online. You know how sometimes your mouse-hand doesn’t go quite as fast as your brain and you end up clicking on the wrong thing? All of a sudden I was watching an interview with Sylvester Stallone! Who can click off on that?!
Sly’s got another Rocky movie coming out, this time he’s the trainer. Lee Cowan at CBS was asking him how he created and sold the original Rocky movie. For pet lovers it was a touching story.
Stallone said he was a down and out actor trying to sell a script in Hollywood so he could get a part. He explained how he was used to surviving on very little and he had adapted to it. But finally got so desperate he had to sell his “best friend” because he couldn’t afford dog food. He then explained how precious his dog was to him and how difficult it had been to give him up. It was the loneliest time he could imagine without his constant companion, a bull mastiff named Butkis. “I spent more time with that dog than any friend I’ve ever had. He was my world.” He had literally discussed the Rocky script with his dog as he wrote.
Of course we all know how “Rocky Balboa” survived, but I never knew about Sly and his dog, or that as soon as he sold the script, the first thing he did was buy back Butkis – at almost 70 times what he had been paid!
Everyone’s life has setbacks. It’s how we deal with them that shows what we’re made of. Sometimes one of the benefits of having a pet is that they give us a reason to live.
