Good ole world famous ground hog, Punxsutawney Phil, didn’t see his shadow this year and said: “As I look at the crowd on Gobbler’s Knob, not a shadow do I see, so spring is meant to be!” (It was a nice sunny day so it’s hard to believe there were no shadows to be seen. Possibly Phil needs glasses.) Learn more about Phil at GroundHogDay.com There’s a movie called Ground Hog Day that’s pretty funny.
Ground Hog day is also celebrated as Hedge Hog day. Beatrix Potter, who wrote stories about Peter Rabbit, created Mrs. Tiggywinkle, a well-known hedgehog in her stories who happens to be extremely good at doing laundry. However, real hedge hogs are covered in spines like porcupines so you have to be very careful handling them. They are not allowed as pets in some states. They have a very strong sense of smell. They like to stay up all night and run in their exercise wheel in their cage. The Hedge Hog clubs have Wheel-A-Thons to raise money by seeing how far their pet hedgies run in a certain amount of time.
